Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Rwanda Kigali city tour-drive to Virunga National Park
Pick up early in the morning after your leisurely breakfast. Go for a memorable Kigali city tour-visit the Gisozi genocide centre to have an in-depth learning about the 1994 Rwanda genocide that claimed thousands of people.
You will also visit the former presidential palace and craft shops. After, have lunch break then go border crossing to D.R. Congo to Virunga National Park. A relaxed evening, dinner and overnight stay will be had at the booked lodge.
Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking & a relaxed visit to Senkwekwe Centre
Take your cup of tea or coffee and after, carry some snacks plus a bottled drinking water. Meet the team from the Virunga National Park at the offices for briefing on gorilla trekking guidelines.
8 habituated gorilla families exist in the Congo Virunga National Park but only one will be assigned to you to track. You will take 2-6 hours trekking to view mountain gorillas but it includes 1 hour of close encounter and photography. There are some amazing birds, primates, forest mammals to expect to enjoy their great sight.
Get back to have a relaxed afternoon at the lodge and in the evening, take a walk to Senkwekwe Centre – the only orphanage Centre for mountain gorillas in East Africa. This is ideal for those of you who are near Mikeno Lodge since it is very near compared to other lodges in Virunga National Park.
Day 3: Hiking to scenic summits of Nyiragongo Volcano
Have an early morning breakfast and meet the team from Virunga National Park at Kibati Patrol Post for briefing but today on guidelines for hiking to Nyiragongo volcano summits. Your hike takes 4-6 hours but it all depends on hikers’ fitness level. At the summits, expect the jaw-dropping views of smoky Lava Lake as it boils especially at night and you can take incredible pictures for lasting memories.
Expect also to have exceptional view of the Virunga National Park, Lake Kivu, Virunga Massifs plus other parks in Rwanda and Uganda. Dinner and overnight stay will be had at Nyiragongo summits.
Day 4: Descending from Nyiragongo Volcano – return to Kigali
Have a delicious breakfast and early enough, begin descending from the summits of Nyiragongo Volcano. Meet your driver guide and embark on a return trip to Rwanda through border crossing. Drop off at the hotel/place of residence or airport in Kigali.
