Virunga National Park. Home to over 200 Individual Mountain Gorillas, Virunga national park is a wonder and true Jungle that deserves your presence. It is located in the eastern region of Congo, right at the border with Rwanda and Uganda, in the massive Virunga mountains. The park is a UNESCO WORLD Heritage site; counting among the largest and oldest conservation areas in Africa, rich in biodiversity, and with a cool climate, and seating on a 7800km2 of land.
Trekking the Gorillas starts at about 8:00 am with a briefing, and registration, and can last for approximately 1-8 hours depending on your trekking speed, and another one hour to watch them play, feed or rest. Only a maximum of 8 people, aged 15 and above, healthy, and with valid trekking permits are permitted to do trekking while abiding by the set rules governing the jungle.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This is the largest conservation area in the democratic republic of Congo, established in 1970. It sprawls through a 6000sqkm land, offering asylum to the giant lowland Gorilla species; the largest Gorilla species in the world and an array of wildlife. Hundreds of visitors from all corners of the world make their way into this safe Jungle each year to glance at man's closest relative. In both parks, it is mandatory to have a trekking permit, used only once, and on the exact agreed day. It is the cheapest destination, of all the other destinations that off the trekking experience. The permits are sold at only 450usd; a fee that is used for conservation purposes. We recommend all trekkers to purchase their permits in advance to secure early since the demand is high.
Tracking age is restricted to over 15 years of age, for only 8members per gorilla group per day. Some of the requirements for a gorilla safari to Congo include; yellow fever vaccination(mandatory), visa, Covid19 negative test form, hiking boats, passport, jackets, long-sleeved shirts, trousers, professional camera, insecticides, and passport among others. The gorilla trekking rules in the parks include; no littering, no noise, no smoking, no use of flashlights while taking photos and standing 7mtrs off the apes among others. You can access Congo by air or road, from any direction. Visitors can either land at Goma international airport or at Kigali international airport, where the driver guide meets and transfers them to the park in Congo. The entire movement is very interesting, with various breathtaking sceneries to lookout for. For those in Congo, the distance from Goma to Virunga national park covers approximately 32km.
