Mountain gorillas are the largest and most powerful of all the primates in the world, with very thick bodies and charming appearance. They live for about 40-45 years in the heart of Virunga Jungles. Very shy, but aggressive when offended or feeling unsafe. They live a social life, led by one dominant silverback, whose duty is to ensure security, leadership, and makeover 25 sounds like a call or signal to others. The activity is done in two destinations in the western part of Uganda, at the foothills of giant Virunga Mountains, composed of lush vegetation, rare tree species and decorated by mist.
Impenetrable yet penetrable; Bwindi impenetrable national park is the most famous gorilla trekking destination in Uganda, offering asylum to over 18 gorilla families. It has the highest concentration of gorillas in the entire Virunga region, of which some reports suggest they are a little different from the rest of the mountain gorillas in the same region.
Created in 1991, there are four sectors that visitors pick from; Buhoma sector in the northern part, Nkuringo in the south, Ruhija in the eastern part and Rushaga in the south east. Interestingly, it is now possible to spend four hours rather than one with the gorillas while in a habituation experience in Rushaga sector.
Established to protect the endangered mountain Gorillas; Mgahinga national park is a must-visit destination while on a Gorilla tour in Uganda. It is less congested, easy to hike, and secure. Two exciting Gorilla families are habituated here, and eight trekking permits are available for visitors, from far and within Uganda per day.
Rules governing these two jungles include; no making noise, standing at least 7mtrs from the Apes, no littering the place, no looking into the Apes eyes, no smoking, and no using flashlights while taking photos among others. Gorilla trekking tour occurs all year round, though the most convenient months are December to February and June to October. The country experiences two weather patterns, the rainy season and wet season. However, in this tropical rain forest, rain can fall at any time, so adequate preparation is required.
Putting aside the accommodation, transportation, and any other safari costs, It has been indicated in the current Uganda Wildlife Authority 2020-22 tariff that, gorilla trekking permits for Non-Foreign Residents at 700 USD, foreign residents at 600 USD and East African residents, inclusive of Ugandans; 250,000 UGX. This money is channeled into conservation efforts. It is advisable to reserve a gorilla permit at least 3 months in advance, because their demand is high, yet the slots are limited.
It is important that as you plan your safari, put in mind these; medical insurance, a professional camera, binoculars, jackets to protect against rain, good hiking boots, pair of gloves, long-sleeved shirts, trousers, passport, visa and medical documents such as covid19 negative test form among others. A mountain gorilla tour in Uganda is a big deal and a paying adventure. You don't need to be left behind because you can come as a group, solo, family, or with friends, in a luxury or budget way.
